You can help reforest The Atlantic Forest, one of the biggest and most endangered tropical forests in the world. Join the Conservancy's Plant a Billion Trees campaign, where one dollar plants one tree, and you'll also help restore 2.5 million acres of land.

Today is Arbor Day in the state of Washington and I have plans to plant a few trees in my yard. (Cherry, Plum, Apple and a Fig) So my thoughts are on planting trees today and I found that The Nature Conservancy has recently launched a new website, www.plantabillion.org. The aim of this site is to raise money to help reforest 2.5 million acres of land in the Atlantic Forest. One dollar buys one tree, so far they have raised 176,080 dollars. Not only will this effort help to remove nearly 10 million pounds of carbon from the atmosphere annually, the goal is to help protect critical watersheds as well as create jobs.

Tropical forests, in particular, can be described as the "lungs" of the earth, converting vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the oxygen on which we all depend. The Atlantic Forest in Brazil is one such "lung" -- and it's in deep trouble now, having been deforested to within an inch of its life.

Did your new garden furniture, construction lumber, printer paper or book cost an orangutan its home? I bet that few of us know the origin of the forest products we purchase. And even fewer know whether these forests were sustainably managed and legally harvested before the timber made its way into the finished products that we have in our homes and offices. But knowing matters. And choosing responsibly -- asking for and buying wood and paper products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) -- is good for people, good for forests and good for the planet.

Almost all biofuels used today cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the pollution caused by producing these "green" fuels is taken into account, two studies published Thursday have concluded. The benefits of biofuels have come under increasing attack in recent months as scientists have evaluated the global environmental cost of their production. The new studies, published by the journal Science, are likely to add to the controversy.
