The overall grizzly bear population in the Yellowstone area is thriving, but there is some concern about the number of female grizzlies killed this year. Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team leader Chuck Schwartz says the female deaths were approaching a threshold that, if repeated next year, could trigger a review of the decision earlier this year to remove the Yellowstone grizzly from protection under the Endangered Species Act. There are an estimated 571 grizzly bears in the Yellowstone National Park area.

The staff at the Washington, DC National Zoo have artificially inseminated their female giant panda, Mei Xiang, in an effort to produce a new baby panda cub. Read about their scientists' efforts, see graphs of panda hormone levels (and here you thought you'd seen everything on Digg), and learn more about panda ovulation than you ever wanted to! Because we were confident that Mei had ovulated, Zoo scientists and veterinarians have performed two artificial inseminations on Mei Xiang. The first procedure took place yesterday early evening, and the second this morning. We will continue to monitor her hormones over the next several months.
