Droughts could hit the country twice as often as now and could be more severe in key agricultural production areas, the Bureau of Meteorology and the country's top science organisation, the CSIRO, said in a joint report. "Parts of these high-level projections read more like a disaster novel than a scientific report," said Tony Burke, the agriculture minister. "What's clear is that the cycle of drought is going to be more regular and deeper than ever."

Scientists and leaders from business and government met in Canberra in May 2008 to discuss the need for action over climate change. Tim Flannery explains the urgency and suggests a radical solution. Tim Costello says climate change is causing poverty and undoing 50 years of development work in the world's poorest countries. The group discussed the technologies available for saving energy, and the options ahead for reducing carbon output through carbon trading. Alexandra de Blas reports from the forum.

South West Western Australia is one of the world's 25 hotspots of biodiversity. But climate change and a history of land clearing mean its future is uncertain. Gondwana Link is a visionary project counteracting that threat by reconnecting the bush and building corridors through the landscape. Join Alexandra de Blas on Earthbeat's magical mystery tour of some of the most spectacular flora on Earth.

A sighting by a Woman's Day reader over 30 years ago led to the 'rediscovery' of the presumed-extinct Bridled Nailtail Wallaby. Now, you can help support a small community of 'nailtails' at AWC's Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary.
