Air pollution is substantially harming every major ecosystem type in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States -- according to a new report co-written by experts from The Nature Conservancy and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. And the report's co-authors say pollutants ranging from mercury to ground-level ozone are degrading the services nature provides us, too -- resulting in smaller fish stocks, reduced agricultural production, and even a decline in honey bee populations.

No ecosystem type in the eastern United States is free of the effects of air pollution, according to a report released today by The Nature Conservancy and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. From streams and rivers to forests and wetlands, air pollution reduces the benefits these ecosystems provide to society, and damages human health and economies. Sulfur, nitrogen, mercury and ground-level ozone not only contaminate the air we breathe, they also enter the soil and water, causing a complex set of problems.

Many animals are said to define true wilderness, but the best candidate is arguably the wolverine. The reason isn't so much its legendary ferocity or even the remoteness of its habitat. It's the fact that the wolverine is so intolerant of human disturbance. The wolverine is in desperate trouble these days. Perhaps only 500 remain in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Even that number may be a considerable overestimate, according to a coalition of conservation groups that argues that the wolverine deserves the protection of the Endangered Species Act. They plan to sue the Fish and Wildlife Service if it does not reverse its recent decision to leave the wolverine to its fate.

If the most dire climate predictions come to pass, the Arctic ice cap will melt entirely, and polar bears could face extinction. So why not pack a few off to Antarctica, where the sea ice will never run out?

Researchers from the College of William and Mary's Center for Conservation Biology and The Nature Conservancy in the US have observed the record-setting migration of a female Whimbrel named Winnie from its feeding grounds on the Delmarva Peninsula in the east coast of the US to breeding grounds on the McKenzie River near the Alaska-Canada border (see map).

In the mid-elevations of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and Colombia, most of the forests still standing are in traditional coffee plantations. These provide the last refuge for birds that have lost their habitat to the vast destruction of tropical forests. Each purchase of shade coffee makes a difference. Seattle Audubon Society's Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign recognizes the important role of coffee in preserving healthy forest habitat. Learn more about coffee and birds.
