So tell me if this scenario sounds familiar: Your ED wanders into your office asking that you build an online marketing campaign to publicize a large-scale announcement. When's this big announcement taking place? Tomorrow. What's the marketing budget? Nada.
But don't worry: thanks to online social news networks, you've got the perfect hammer in your tool belt for this crisis.

Carbon offsetting has been around for a while now, giving you the opportunity to reduce your "carbon footprint" by trading cash for your personal carbon output. In most cases, this quid pro quo occurs through a donation to an organization that plants trees of some sort in some place where, hopefully (but not always), they are both needed and helpful to the original habitat. In theory, these trees then sequester carbon dioxide in the air-a major cause of global warming, acid rain, and other current environmental problems.

More strife in Iraq. U.S. financial system in crisis. Rice prices soar.
None of these headlines will matter a bit, though, if two men pursuing a lawsuit in a court in Hawaii turn out to be right. They think a giant particle accelerator that will begin smashing protons together outside Geneva this summer might produce a black hole that will spell the end of the Earth - and maybe the universe.
Scientists say that is very unlikely - though they have done some checking just to make sure.

The Nature Conservancy is going public with its Voluntary Carbon Offset Program, offering individuals the opportunity to offset part of their own carbon footprints by contributing funds to set aside private lands that would othwerwise lay idle and degrade for conservation and forest regeneration.

Air pollution is substantially harming every major ecosystem type in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States -- according to a new report co-written by experts from The Nature Conservancy and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.
And the report's co-authors say pollutants ranging from mercury to ground-level ozone are degrading the services nature provides us, too -- resulting in smaller fish stocks, reduced agricultural production, and even a decline in honey bee populations.

No ecosystem type in the eastern United States is free of the effects of air pollution, according to a report released today by The Nature Conservancy and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. From streams and rivers to forests and wetlands, air pollution reduces the benefits these ecosystems provide to society, and damages human health and economies. Sulfur, nitrogen, mercury and ground-level ozone not only contaminate the air we breathe, they also enter the soil and water, causing a complex set of problems.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy hosted a live chat earlier this week with Beth Kanter (Beth's Blog) and Jonathon Colman (The Nature Conservancy) called "Building Your Online Presence on a Tight Budget."
I recommend that you look over the whole transcript yourself, but here are a few points that stood out for me...
